Beneath Green

Jeong Yunyoung

Installation view 1

The exhibition Beneath Green by artist Jung Yoon-Young is currently on view at Suji’s Gallery We. This poetic reflection on life’s external forms captures the pulsating rhythms, transient stillness, and inevitable fading that unfold beneath the surface. At first encounter, Jung Yoon-Young’s work seems serene—its natural hues, gentle contours, and harmonious balance evoke a quiet beauty. Yet, as with all things imbued with vitality, deeper observation reveals an intricate complexity, layered with subtle tension and concealed narratives. The faint tremors of life, its climactic moments of bloom, and its slow ebbing away speak to the cycles of transformation and connection. These elements, enduring steadfastly through the passage of time, mirror the resilience and impermanence of human existence.

Jung’s mastery of lines and layers transcends technique, becoming a profound visual language that expresses the essence of being and the flow of time. Her diverse application of lines—delicate as whispers or bold as currents—constructs a dynamic rhythm that animates each composition. Another striking aspect of this exhibition is her use of color, layered with fluid precision. Beautiful and grotesque hues meld and overlap, charting a passage through time and embodying the weight of existence. Her works, created on translucent silk rather than traditional canvas, unveil traces and impressions beneath the surface, inviting a contemplative journey into deeper philosophical realms. Together, these lines and layers symbolically capture the ceaseless flow of life’s transformations, forging a profound and evocative depth.

Jung Yoon-Young, who studied Buddhist Art at Dongguk University and earned her master’s and doctoral degrees in painting at Kookmin University, bridges the painterly traditions of East and West to explore the vitality of existence. Her art is deeply rooted in personal memories and experiences, stirring vivid sensations of life and death. The anguish of fading, the paradoxical surge of life, an awareness of fragility, and a profound compassion for impermanence are intricately interwoven into her creations. Her work also resonates with the awe and wonder of life’s fleeting beauty. This exhibition stands as a testament to the interweaving of art and life. As the new year unfolds, it offers a moment of reflection on the extraordinary within the ordinary, inviting viewers to ponder the essence of existence and the meaning it holds.
