Backside works. is a highly enigmatic artist, often referred to as the “Banksy of Asia,” as the artist remains shrouded in mystery, concealing the artist’s face, real name, gender, and age while being based in Fukuoka, Japan. Rather than aiming for high art, the artist incorporates subcultures such as anime and graffiti art into the artist’s works.

Influenced by 1980s and 1990s Japanese anime, manga, and street culture, Backside works. seeks to draw as flatly as possible, utilizing manga techniques. The artist’s pieces combine various media, including painting, spray paint, pen drawing, giclée, and stickers to create a cohesive work of art.

The artist often depicts a cute girl character, but insists she is a heroine, not just a girl. “My only job is to send the heroine to your side,” Backside works. says, seeing the heroine as a figure who shares life’s stories with the viewer, transforming the observer into the protagonist.

With distinctive otaku-inspired characters and refined sensibility, Backside works. has collaborated extensively with major brands such as Levi’s, Converse, Weekly Shonen Jump, and Sanrio characters.

This exhibition features original works by Backside works. along with collaboration pieces with Sanrio characters. It is the second such collaboration, following the “50 five-o” exhibition in Tokyo. The new exhibition showcases works with Hello Kitty, My Melody, Kuromi, Cinnamoroll, Pompompurin, and Pochacco. These pieces illustrate both the world of Sanrio characters within the universe of the artist’s heroine, Valiant Girl, as well as the Sanrio characters within Valiant Girl’s world, embodying Sanrio’s philosophy of “everyone getting along together.”

The artist chose the title “Fried Rice” for the exhibition because it is the artist’s favorite dish and something the artist always feels like eating. Reflecting this, the exhibition is composed of works that deliver a playful and cheerful atmosphere.
