Lim, Oksang
The exhibition < I am a tree > currently held at Gallery NoW features works based on soil that Lim has used as a material for a long time. These works are completed with the drawing process using the technique of intaglio by a single quick stroke after applying a thick layer of soil on the canvas and the subsequent coloring process. The paintings of trees and plum blossoms of Lim, who is a first-generation protest artist, are a signal of new changes in his work just as a subtle sign of life before the spring breeze blows. This exhibition introduces to the public Lim standing as an artist whose life mission is to paint, not as a protest artist he once was, who had criticized civilized society and political decay and engaged in social movements.
“I am a tree. When the tree is pained, I am pained, and when it dances, I dance. I want to live here, planting my roots deeply in this land and breathing in nature and the world like a tree, from my feet to my head.”
