Celebrating the start of another dazzling summer, Gallery BK presents a feature exhibition at the end of this April. Preparing for the ambush of early summer heatwaves and the consequent loss of palate, the gallery has prepared Summery Luncheon: Bon appétit! in which fourteen Korean and international artists reawaken our appetite through their vibrant narratives and fascinating and resplendent delivery and provide an occasion for reflecting upon the myriad tastes of collectors.
Heading into the festive weather of May, this exhibition — as diverse as a lavish luncheon — gathers some of the most in-demand artists in one place and presents the breadth of their highly unique and individual works admired not only by Korean collectors but those worldwide. Here, the vivid and instinctive colors, striking and unforgettable protagonists, and aesthetic theory and narratives reflected in the works of each artist satiate the raging hunger in our minds; their highly original, innovative style and inimitable characteristics relieving the tempestuous inner thirst of those seeking new aesthetic delicacies.
Also, the various protagonists presented by the artists on their canvases act as a common means for them to express their inner emotions, urges, and desires. Rather than rendering themselves in language or words, the artists freely express themselves through a specific set of images ingrained in each of their practices. In addition, their color palettes — ranging from raw and untamed, dynamic and lively, to hierarchical at sometimes — add another layer of inner, instinctive language that further enriches the viewer’s understanding.
The German philosopher and aesthetician Theodor W. Adorno (1903-1969) proclaimed that, unlike the arts in the previous eras, the artist in the modern age must express the emotions inherent in reality in nonverbal ways to condense one’s utopic pursuits for a better reality, and defined it as the artistic expression of the zeitgeist.
“Instead of describing objective realities in more precise and coherent ways, and even beyond the realm of reproducing the spiritual, they enter a realm that indicates things impossible to render in words.” – Theodor W. Adorno
In communicating and establishing a relationship of engagement between themselves and the third party — the observers — the fourteen artists in this exhibition assert their images in a format that allows reciprocal reasoning and coherent understanding to viewers, and, at the same time, they dive into profound introspections in the utopic realm through their expressive methodologies and limitless visual expressions.
In this exhibition, the artists serve the subjects and detailed compositions of their discussions in a plentiful afternoon luncheon that immerse visitors into unexpected contemplations, and these moments of aesthetic enlightenment — impossible to fully grasp or define in theoretical explanations — will trigger unhampered explorations in the minds of viewers, breathe liveliness into their everyday lives, and provide experiences that are simultaneously intellectual and sentimental. Through this feature exhibition, Gallery BK hopes to treat visitors to a luncheon of delicious and refreshing artworks that livens the aesthetic appetite of visitors.
